About Silver

Silver, gold, and platinum are the three noble or precious metals. They are rare, chemically stable, plastic, malleable, and ductile. Silver is a metal that reflects at least 95% of light that strikes it, making it the most lustrous metal on earth. In fact, the chemical symbol for silver, Ag, is derived from the the Latin word argentum meaning, “white and shining”.

Silver was one of the first metals to be used by humans. The art of silversmithing dates back to the ancient Byzantine, Phoenician and Egyptian empires, when silver was forged into domestic utensils, jewelry, weapons, accoutrements, religious, and healing ritual items. To this day, silver remains an important metal in trade and currency and is a vital component of modern gadgets and equipment.

99.9% silver or fine silver is too soft to be made into any functioning object, therefore copper is added to strengthen the silver. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver mixed with 7.5% of other metals, which is usually copper. Filigrenasia only sells 92.5% sterling silver and above without any plating or anti-tarnish solution.
